Does Granite Attract Lightning?

Inquiring minds would like to know.

WHEW!

Honey, we have been inundated with lightning storms in recent days and weeks to say the least! Last night was a repeat of "in a war zone" type storms that have moved through the Dirt Road region; love the rain but not the lightning!

A week ago Saturday, neighbors just down the highway lost their home to a lightning strike. Their home burned to the ground within just a couple of hours. It is gut wrenching to see what remains of their home. Fortunately, no one was injured and there was no loss of life.

Our dairy neighbor has lost 19 dairy cows to lightning within the last two weeks! And last night, the lightning was shattering light bulbs in our house; we count our blessings that it was only light bulbs! While all our resident fowl, canine and feline are accounted for - you can only imagine the big-eyed looks of shock from these severe storms.

All this leads me to wonder: could the large vein of granite (not to mention the ginormous outcroppings that the coyotes love to claim and howl from......) that our Farm here on the Dirt Road lies upon be attracting lightning when storms enter this area?

My Google searching of this wonderment has been fruitless this morning. You hoo! Any lightning and granite specialists out there?

Well, the thing is that the granite's been there all along. If all this lightning is something fairly new I can't see how the granite would be a factor.
Lightning zapping lightbulbs-that's a little freaky.

One thing I forgot to mention (...oops, my bad...), our down-the-road neighbor stopped by late Sunday while they were over this way. She started talking about when she was a child growing up out here and how bad the lightning always was even recalling an incident where a ball of fire shot out of the electrical outlet once. She was surprised when I asked about the granite and said that her Mom always thought the same thing.

Hi

I was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Big granite boulders around us and a reputation as being the area with the most lightning strikes on the planet.

So.. I'd say there is a connection, but not sure what.

If you're still interested - let me know. I have my grandfather's books (geology) and can do some snooping on the topic.

Hi Harriet

I just today found your reply on my one blog (dated 8 august!)

I wanted to say thanks for the nice things you said about my childhood memories of my gran's house and to wish your gran a (belated) happy 90th birthday!
