To celebrate my birthday this year, I’ve decided to establish a clear definition and declaration of “middle age”.
Y’all with me, here?
First, in order to grasp the concept of middle age, we must understand the terminology we are interpreting.
“Middle” is the exact mid point between two opposite end points (such as the beginning and the end) or exactly “half way”. For our purposes “the end” represents what we deem as the end of this life.
And “age” is a chronologically increasing numbering system applied to ourselves as we accumulate life since our birth year after year.
Make sense?
Well, for what it’s worth, it’s a plan that’s been around awhile, anyway.
To that extent it has always puzzled me when I’ve heard passing comments about the whole middle age concept:
“Oh, she’s in her 30’s, you know, middle age…....”
Whaaaat...? Is she only gonna live to be 70 or so........exactly who decides when one is officially “middle aged”?
“Oh look, there’s her dad, you know that middle aged man over there…..”
Does it have a look to it? And if so, what does it look like?
Since I really don’t care about the whole age arrangement, I really don’t need anyone telling me when I am of middle age – and especially since I don’t know what it looks like or really much less anything else about it except to say that it’s a midpoint. And besides, I'm still working on what I want to be when I grow up!
So this year to honor my birthday, I’ve decided I’m living to be 130 years old! Therefore, I won’t be reaching middle age until I’m 65! Besides, Bob Dylan is turning 66 today; do you really think he considers himself middle age yet?
Hello and welcome Year 46!
Where’s my tiara?
Woo Hoo!
Y’all behave!
;-)
